Set during the waning days of World War II, Grave of the Fireflies follows teenage Seita and his young sister Setsuko as they struggle to survive after an American air raid claims their mother and leaves them alone in the ravaged Japanese countryside.
Estranged from their only relative, the siblings seek refuge in an abandoned bomb shelter, where Seita tries desperately to care for Setsuko amid worsening hunger and despair. Despite the bleakness, they find brief moments of joy and innocence.
Based on the real-life experiences of survivor Nosaka Akiyuki, Grave of the Fireflies is widely regarded as a landmark achievement in animation and cinema. Directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker and Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata, the film offers a hauntingly beautiful portrait of resilience, love, and the tragic cost of war.
