Dirty Dancing Movie Summary

In this romantic drama, a young girl learns about love, adult responsibilities, and how to execute The Dirty Boogie. With intentions to join the Peace Corps the following summer, the 17-year-old “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is spending the summer with her family at a vacation hotel in the Catskills in 1963.

This is likely to be her final summer as a carefree teenager. Most of the resort’s older visitors bore Baby to tears, and she doesn’t get along with her elder sister Lisa (Jane Brucker). However, one night, Baby hears what seems to be a party in the employee dorm, so she investigates.

When she peeks in, she finds that most hotel workers are engaged in close dancing that would quickly get you booted out of the senior prom. A dancer in the resort’s floor show named Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), who is extremely attractive, captures Baby’s attention.

She immediately falls in love and wants to be close to him. Baby offers to learn the dance moves and take Penny’s place when she becomes pregnant after having an affair with one of the servers.

Nevertheless, Baby’s father, Dr. Jake Houseman (Jerry Orbach), won’t have any of it because he believes that Johnny is a lowlife and that his daughter is too young to understand her feelings.

The movie Dirty Dancing was a pleasant surprise at the box office. The soundtrack record was even more successful, producing several hit songs and generating a popular concert tour with some of its performers.
